MOORAMBILLA VOICES
Welcome to the Moorambilla Voices website. Here you’ll
find information about the project, who is
participating, information for 2008 singers and how to
contact us for more information and resources.
What is
Moorambilla Voices?
Moorambilla Voices is the umbrella organisation that has
created and supports the ongoing development of the
Moorambilla Voices provides children from regional and
remote communities the opportunity to participate in
high-level music making and artistic pursuits, offering
talented young singers the chance to experience choral
music making with leading professional musicians and
composers.
Moorambilla Voices exists to create an inclusive
regional children’s choir of excellence who can perform
and represent their region locally and nationally, with
the artistic purpose of creating a body of Australian
music that directly reflects the life experiences of the
choristers and those of the region.
For the 220 members of Moorambilla Voices the experience
is an accessible, positive, exciting, stimulating and
collaborative form of regional and self-expression. The
opportunities offered by the Moorambilla Voices project
are unique in the region. No such other musical
opportunity exists.
Access to Moorambilla Voices is based entirely on
musical ability and the ability to actively contribute
to the excellence of the group, not on financial
circumstance.
The Moorambilla regional singers and their vast network
of volunteer supporters have, over the last three years,
shown how music can be a powerful and inclusive way of
strengthening communities
-
by engaging hard to reach populations, such as
youth, ethnic and socially disadvantaged communities
-
providing a creative focus for communities to
explore issues and aspirations
-
creating new and diverse artistic work and cultural
experiences
-
developing confidence, pride and a sense of
belonging in participants
Moorambilla Voices also encompasses opportunities for
adults in remote communities to form and receive support
through mentoring for local adult choirs.
Currently these include the Coonamble based Songs in the
Key of Bloke and Songs in the Key of She, and the Hot
Flats from Trangie / Nevertire / Warren, with fledging
groups in Lightning Ridge and White Cliffs.
Plans for
the future
Opportunities include a touring group to be selected
from the Regional Boys and Girls choirs to take the
Moorambilla experience on tour, both back into their
communities and also to perform their works at major
festivals and performances around Australia.
In January 2008, because of the skills gained in this
project 6 regional children received scholarships to be
part of the National Children’s Choir – Junior Gondwana
at the National Choral Camp in Sydney season. This
opportunity would not have been remotely possible
without the skills acquired at Moorambilla regional
residency camps in 2006 and 2007. It is anticipated that
this opportunity and relationship will grow in the
coming years.
We will continue to work with like-minded organisations
regionally, nationally and internationally to offer
outstanding opportunities to the singers of Moorambilla
Voices.
