MENTOR
PROGRAM
Integral to the success and growth of the Moorambilla
Voices project over the last 3 years has been the
opportunity for singers of all ages to join in the
Moorambilla Festival and actively show audiences the
power singing has to bring communities together.
Moorambilla Voices is committed to expanding the
opportunities for music making in the local and regional
community and does this by mentoring these singers.
Through the skills and generosity of Michelle Leonard
and the Leichhardt Espresso Chorus this has become a
reality.
The Leichhardt Espresso Chorus, now in its 10th
year, seeks to actively support the growth and
development of these choirs both artistically and
administratively. They have been touring in this region
since 2002 doing concerts and workshops with singers in
these communities, and since the festival’s inception
(2006) have been choir in residence. In this capacity
they sing with both the regional childrens choir and the
local adults - encouraging all in the pursuit of musical
excellence, and showing in a practical way what
“ordinary” people can do.
Their mentoring has enabled the formation of other
regional adult choirs, created opportunities to run
workshops for adults at the festival and the creation of
innovative new choral repertoire with the children as
part of the Moorambilla regional children’s choir.
Many supervising teachers at the Moorambilla regional
children’s choir camps are interested and developing
musicians who wish to seek professional development
through these camps. The Walgett School of Distance
Education has actively integrated these camps into their
student and teacher programs since 2006.
Moorambilla offers capacity building both artistically
and in the management of the developing choir and its
concerts. It encourages and supports the formation of
singing groups in the region and their performances for
their local communities – and further. Members in this
region do not have access to regular musical or project
support to learn repertoire and present performances
without this help.
By providing this opportunity the festival and the
Moorambilla Voices mentor program enables more people to
sing together, no matter what their age or background.
This is the challenge thrown out to the wider community
from Moorambilla - summed up as
COME ON
WE DARE YOU TO SING!
